How to succeed in pursuing a career in arts and entertainment in Kenya

A few years ago, mentioning that you want to pursue a career in arts and entertainment was the biggest scare attack you would have given your family. The area was seen as a quick way to becoming broke or a career path that was taken by the lazy, the idle or those who could not do well in school.

Today the story is very different. Many people have proven the negative perspective to be just a myth. I could go on and name names, but I will not for today. Today I want to show you how you can also make a great career out of art and entertainment.

  • If you want it, you have to be willing to go for it

There is no short cut when it comes to success in whichever career path you desire to pursue. You have to be willing to go for what you believe you want and are able to accomplish. It is not enough to just dream. You need to wake up and start drawing the road map to the destination of your dream. The more you wait, the more room you give to the idea of giving up.

  • Giving up is not an option

Talking of giving up, the easy way out will always knock on your door and not once. You know the voice. You have to learn to ignore it. It may even come through your closest friends and family but only you gets to manage your dreams. No one else can do that for you.

  • Master your craft

The best thing to do as you pursue your big goal is to keep learning, growing and mastering. People can tell when what you offer especially in arts and entertainment, is not quality. Mastered craft takes centuries to fade.

  • Find your niche and stick to it, then diversify

You can be all you want to be but start somewhere where you are sure you will give your best. Later, after you have established a brand, you can use the brand to build the other dreams.

  • Master your finances

Now, many artists think that all they need is to make money and more money they will not have to worry about money. Sadly, one thing about art is that the tide can turn in a second and those who were not prepared, get swallowed up by the waves of change. Have a financial partner at least if you know you cannot handle it yourself. You will be glad you took the time to secure your future.

There you go. The five ‘hows’ I believe will be your best guide to a successful career in arts and entertainment. You can use them in any career and I’m positive that the outcome will be great.
